The Unicorn In Popular Culture

The Unicorn Daily News has returned from our sugar plum-induced holiday food coma to bring you the latest news about unicorns!

While your UDN reporters have certainly noticed a renewed interest in unicorns in popular culture, Matt Frassica, a reporter with the Louisville, Kentucky- based Courier-Journal, has also taken note of the unicorn's increasing popularity in an article appearing in today's edition of that newspaper. Mr. Frassica's report states that the "unicorn trend has ridden a sparkly rainbow into the mainstream," and cites the many unicorn-themed products on Etsy.com and unicorns' appearances on television shows and music videos as evidence of the unicorn's trendiness.

Honorary Unicorn: The Rare Single-Antlered Roe Deer

Our third featured "Honorary Unicorn" is the rare single-antlered roe deer. In 2008, Italian researchers reported the birth of a single-antlered deer. This young, male deer has a genetic abnormality that produced one antler, instead of the normal two. Interestingly, the antler is also located in the center of his head, resembling a unicorn! Some historians argue that this rare genetic occurrence in deer may be the origin of the unicorn myth!

Evidence of Unicorns Found in Cave Paintings?

For how long do you think humans have admired unicorns? 100 years? 500 years? Even longer?

If your answer was in the ballpark of "over 10,000 years" then you're right! Unicorns are no passing trend!

In fact, the Cueva de las Manos (known as Cave of the Hands for its paintings of hands), a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Argentina, features rock art depictions of animals that are more than 10,000 years old.  Among these very old paintings of various animals is a UNICORN! It looks sort of like a very overweight goat, but it definitely has a single horn! For more information and photos, check out the UNESCO web site and the Patagonia Monsters blog, which has lots of information about depictions of unicorns in the Patagonia region.

Our other unicorny cave painting is from Lascaux Cave in France and dates back to 15,000 to 10,000 BC. It might be a depiction of a unicorn or it might be a profile of a two-horned animal; only its artist knows for sure, and he or she is long gone by now. However, it is officially known as "The Unicorn," regardless of its apparent second horn. Find out more about the Lascaux Cave paintings on a virtual Lascaux Cave tour.

Do you know of any other unicorn-themed art, prehistoric or otherwise?  Send your story to The Unicorn Daily News (unicorns.blogspot[at]gmail.com), and it will be included in one of our daily feature stories!

Honorary Unicorn: The Marvelous Unicorn Fish

Today's post features an amazing honorary unicorn that comes from the tropical seas of the Pacific and Indian Oceans! The aptly-named unicorn fish has a spiky protrusion on its fishy forehead. Both male and female unicorn fish grow these horns, but it is not known whether these horns have any function. Find out more about the fascinating unicorn fish at Wikipedia and fishlore.com.

"Charlie the Unicorn," A Unicorn-Themed Viral Video

Charlie the Unicorn and his friends became popular when a flash video by the film company, FilmCow, featuring their trip to Candy Mountain went viral on YouTube in 2008.  Over the next two years, two sequels were created, and the videos have entertained tens of thousands of viewers.  More recently, FilmCow created a parody series called "Charlie teh Unicron," which has also been a hit on YouTube.

The films feature a reluctant Charlie the Unicorn and two other unicorns who encourage Charlie to join them in their (mis)adventures.

If you haven't seen Charlie the Unicorn yet, check out the original, below, or the whole series on the FilmCow YouTube channel.

Honorary Unicorn: The Majestic Narwhal

While there is much debate over the existence of the unicorns described in accounts of natural history and mythology dating back over 2,000 years, one thing is certain: there are many naturally occurring, single-horned animals.

These single-horned animals are known as monocerotes, from the Greek term for unicorn, monoceros, but I like to think of them as "honorary unicorns."

The Unicorn Daily News will occasionally feature one of these honorary unicorns in our daily news bulletins, so make sure to visit often – you don't want to miss out on these amazing creatures!

And now, we present to you, our first featured honorary unicorn: The Majestic Narwhal!

The male narwhal technically does not have a horn, but a very long tooth - 7-10 feet (2-3 meters) in length - that protrudes from its upper jaw. These unicorns of the sea are found in Arctic waters, where they thrive on halibut, shrimp, cod, and squid. The narwhal "horn" does not have magical healing powers, but it is used by male narwhals in displays of dominance to reinforce their social hierarchies. Fascinating!!

Robot Unicorn Attack: The Popular Game Celebrates the Holidays

In early 2010, the Adult Swim Games web site brought us Robot Unicorn Attack, the highly addictive, yet simple, electronic game created by Spiritonin Media Games that has been played over 33 million times by unicorn enthusiasts on the Adult Swim Games web site, facebook, and through an iPhone app.

If you are unfamiliar with Robot Unicorn Attack, the gameplay is simple: the player controls a beautiful robotic unicorn running and jumping through a landscape that is populated by rainbows, fairies, and silver stars.  To obtain a high score, the player must capture as many fairies and dash through as many silver stars as possible.  The entire game is set to the enchanting sounds of Erasure's synthpop hit, Always.  A Heavy Metal spinoff version, adapted by Smashing Ideas, Inc., and released in October by Adult Swim Games, replaced the fairies and stars with imps and pentagrams, and has a distinctively heavy metal soundtrack.

These screencaps for the original and heavy metal versions of Robot Unicorn Attack, below, show the simplicity of the game and the differences between the two versions:

By now, dear reader, I am sure you are simply dying to test your Robot Unicorn Attack skills!
But, WAIT, there's more!

The kind folks at Adult Swim have released another Robot Unicorn Attack spinoff just in time for the holidays, and this time it is CHRISTMAS-THEMED!  Robot Unicorn Attack Christmas Edition is similar to the previous two versions of the game, except that the player navigates the unicorn through a snow-covered winter wonderland of sparkling lights and peppermint candies to collect gift-wrapped presents and dash through snowflakes. For now, this version is available only through the iPhone app store, where you can get it for just 99 cents!  You can't get much for 99 cents these days, and it's a great bargain for a game that combines the magic of both unicorns and snowflakes!

Here's a screencap from the Robot Unicorn Attack Christmas Edition:

It is exciting to see the expansion of the Robot Unicorn Attack empire. The Unicorn Daily News will be following this unicorn-themed game franchise closely, so come back often for updates!

Exclusive First Look at Upcoming Feature Film, "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn"

picture from empireonline.com

Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson have teamed up to produce the first full-length cinematic production of The Adventures of Tintin, based on the popular Belgian comic strips.

The first choice of the plot for the first film is, of course, a Unicorn-themed swashbuckling-mystery story! (OK... so there will not be any actual unicorn-pirates in this movie, but the plot is still just as exciting! Think elusive pirate treasures, adventures at sea, and a mysterious pirate ship named the Unicorn...and of course Tintin's trusty, adorable dog, Snowy at the helm!)

Daniel Craig, Jamie Bell, and Andy Serkis star as the voices of Red Rackham, Tintin, and Captain Haddock, respectively.

The film will be a CGI, 3-D, unicorn adventure! I can't wait!

Release date: December 2011 (USA), October 2011 (UK).

The Unicorn Daily News will be following this story until its release date, so come back often for more updates on all things Tintin and Unicorns!
